Newton or Lahey?!?

So this week will be discussing Isaac Newton! I'm excited because Teen Wolf has a character called Isaac Lahey! But they are not the same (I mean one is like 157 years old or something...). Believe me there is a huge difference in the two.

See? I don't know about you, but I see a big difference. Another difference is one had a giant effect on science and mathematics and the other is an actor. On a more serious note, let's discuss Newton's accomplishments.

So this genius was born January 4, 1643 in Woolsthrope, England. When he was 3 his mom got remarried to some 65 year old man and left him to live with his grandparents. What a wonderful mother! Maybe she was having a mid-life crisis... Anywho! Then the woman pops up when Isaac is like 12 his mom pops up and makes him work on a farm. Personally I didn't think she had the right but I guess he can't change history. Then his smart teacher convinces his mom to let him go to college so bam! He is sent off to college.

Now here is the creepy part. You know that song 'Ring Around the Rosies'? Well that song has a deep dark meaning talking about death due to an untreatable disease (influenza AKA flu). So he sent back after a few years of school to go back home. Cambridge University was officially shut down after he spent 4  years of his life there. Que miracle year!

So he lives in his old house and he claims that an apple helps his discovery by falling on his head. Sure when he gets hit with fruit it's amazing but when I get hit with fruit it's funny. Back to his amazing discovery.

The apple falls on his head and he says 'OMG What if this has something to do with the planets?' (ok well maybe no those exact words). Basically, somewhere in his scattered brain, he connects these two dots and thinks of gravity. That's right ladies and gents, Isaac Newton didn't discover gravity just refined it. So basically he creates a formula for calculating gravity, which will come later in my blog post saga. Then he decides 'Ok well why stop there?'

Isaac then decided to put the laws of motion into our lives. I have a song for this and law of gravity that he created. Here it is! Sorry but you have to do some scrolling... Basically they say:

1. Every object persists in its state of rest or uniform motion in a straight line unless it's compelled to change that state by forces impressed on it.

2. Force is equal to the change in momentum per change in time. For a constant mass, force equals mass times acceleration.

3. For every action, there is an equal and opposite re-action.

So if this isn't enough he tries to explain light and play God and torture future high school students (me) by making them learn how to calculate areas and curves of lines using calculus.  Oh wait, you have no idea what I'm talking about when I say he tried to explain light (and succeeded)? Does this look familiar?

Pink Floyd's iconic symbol? Yeah that's Isaac's contribution to modern music, as if math, science, history, and astrology wasn't enough. And he wrote a book that you can find out more about in the link at the bottom, it was called "the Principia" and contained his greatest discoveries!

So then he was elected President of the Royal Society , a special place where they store geniuses. This happpened every year until his death. He also worked with money at the 'Master of the Royal Mint'. Then he was knighted, earning the whole Sir Isaac Newton title, by Queen Anne. Sadly, he died on March 31, 1727.He was buried in Westminster Abbey, which is a huge honor, because only famous people get buried there.

Ok so he was 84, regardless Isaac Lahey will always look a little better. Of course a werewolf could never as much damage as calculus has done,  but its a close second.

All of my information cam from Brain Pop, so make sure to check that out. I know I gave you a lot, but that's not even all of the info so if you want to know more click here! As usual the picture are all CTRL + Click to get to those links. Now if you excuse me, due to my lack of accomplishments and my now bad feeling after writing this, I think I may just go listen to The Summer Set, on a loop because I'm just me. Have an awesome week and I hope you have a great Christmas! xx - G

Heat and Dumb 'Fanfic' Moments

You may be questioning my title. For those of you who know what fan fiction is, I applaud you. Society has poisoned your mind and you have become... one of us. To those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, you may need to question if you know any teenage girls. I'll get to that later.

So, heat transfer is what we will be talking about in this particular post. "But Gabby, what is heat transfer?" I'm glad you asked mysterious person reading this. Heat Transfer is the process of thermal energy going from one substance or material to another. If you have watched Teen Wolf (if you do, I need you to comment because I love that show too much for other's comfort) you would know when Peter was set on fire with whatever Lydia made. Since I can't show that picture here, but I can show you a picture from a movie you all know and hopefully love.

This girl is on fire!!! Hate that song.... Well indirectly Katniss is displaying radiation! What is radiation you ask? I can honestly tell you that it isn't lighting yourself on fire (Please don't.). It's the transfer of energy in waves or rays. So if Katniss was ACTUALLY on fire, Peeta would feel an immense amount of radiation, and probably burn himself.

Next we have convection. Convection is another form of heat transfer that happens when warm portions of liquids ad gases rise and the cool liquids sink. Still don't understand? Ok let's take a real life example. Ever been in your room or attic and realize it gets kinda warm in there? The heat rose to the higher leveled floor. Odds are, if you have a basement, it will be on of the coldest places in your house. Besides the freezer of course.

Conduction is the last one so sit tight for a little longer. Conduction is the transfer of heat through direct contact. There are things called conductors. Conductors are materials or objects that allow energy to flow in them. Metal is good example. Blacksmiths stick metal in fire to make it into shapes. That's because the metal heats up with direct contact in the fire and it slowly changes state from solid to liquid! Ta- da! That also happens to be a main reason blacksmiths wear gloves, to keep them from burning themselves. See, the tricky part is that the heat spreads through out the conductor, all the way to the tiny tip. One direct touch to heated metal and you are burned worse than severely over-microwaved bacon.  Insultors are important aswell. They keep you warm. Like UGG boots! Ever wonder why girl love them? Because the inside is lined with faux fur and keep your feet toasty warm. They trap heat into an object

See? Pain is not good children. Take that lesson and run with it. Now if you didn't catch a word of what I just typed for you guys (thanks for hurting my feelings) I do have a song for this one. Feel free to watch it! 'Til next time comrades! xx - G

I guess you may want to know why I related this topic to dumb fanfic moments huh? Well here is your quote from the ever so favored 'Save You Tonight' series; "I felt the heat rise to my cheeks as he said his compliment". See! She was blushing! She felt heat! See my connection? No? Ok... :(

New Jewelry for the Future!

Hola! Bonjour! (Insert foreign language that you speak's word for hello here)!  I'm back with awesome news about a new invention! A bracelet that can keep you warm (prototype from December 2012). This can be very helpful for winter time I mean seriously wouldn't you love to stay a constant temperature? (Especially since I'm anemic I could use the warmth.)

The bracelet is called Wristify. It occasionally blasts your wrist with hot or cold pulses. The wrist has a specific pressure point that helps effect your body heat and mental take on your health state, like when you're sick.

See? The picture just explains the science in a fancier way.

In other news they are focusing on making final adjustments before releasing it to the public outside of their focus group. This product also happens to be extremely Eco-friendly. The men who came up with it (Sam Shames and Mike Gibson) determined that the pressure point not only helps through the pressure point, but tricks the mind into thinking it is warmer as well. Helpful right?

So the prototype in done it's just that old Sam here has some major fashion concerns because the bracelet is considered too bulky for taste ( a decision that I must agree with ).

Time for my question of the... post? I'll go with that:
Do you think a device like that would actually work on you?

Well hope you had an awesome Thanksgiving! I know I did! xx - G

ENERGY!!!!!!!!!!!

What do sports and coffee have in common? Energy! Granted they are different types of energy, but energy nevertheless. Energy is the capacity of a physical system that works. For all you teenagers out there, hold on to your UGG boots and pumpkin spice lattes because what I'm about to tell you may freak you out:

(Yes I created that ^^^ Best Meme Ever!)

What? What is this madness I speak of? Well, let me tell you that when your parents say you have a lot of potential, indirectly they could be calling you fat. I'm joking of course, I know you aren't fat and so what if you are? I'm accepting! =) Moving on... Potential energy, the energy that is stored up inside you waiting come out. Like when you are holding a pencil high up in the air? That's potential energy.! Alison (Teen Wolf all the way! <3) is displaying potential energy as she pulls the arrow back, ready to release the energy with the bow and arrow.

Kinetic Energy is the object has due to its motion. It varies based on mass and speed, along with potential energy. Kinetic energy can be transferred between objects.. Like a pendulum! If that makes sense. See, one ball in a pendulum hits four others and the energy goes straight through and causes the last ball to release the energy. I guess you can say this energy comes in like a wrecking ball. Haha Miley Cyrus jokes. But seriously in a way she is displaying kinetic energy. Technically we all 'came in like a wrecking ball.' Oh God. Help us.

See? Cool huh?

Guys guess what! If you weren't interested yet I have something awesome to tell you. Energy can't be created or destroyed just transferred or stored. Like the pendulum! Ok so you guys can let go of your UGGs now.I hope this helped, but as I usually say here is a song! It isn't by the same guy so bare with me here. Click Here

That's all for now folks! Byeeeeeee xx-G

The United States of Matter!

Behold the great states of matter that hopefully you learned about in like the third grade, but if not, here I am to help you! Technically there are four states of matter, yet again, your teacher has sugar coated the truth from you. These states never change meaning they keep their physical properties. Like squishing a strawberry, it may be flat but it's still a strawberry! There are: Solids, Liquids,Gases, and Plasmas.

Solids -
  • tightly compacted
  • Shape and volume are stable
  • packed closer than liquids and gases

Liquids -
  • free to flow
  • has a definite volume
  • no definite shape
Gases -
  • Matter that moves randomly
  • No definite volume of mass

Plasma
  • electrically charged gas
  • positively charged ions and unbound electrons.
  • Three forms known on Earth: lightning, fire, and neon signs that say 'Open'

And let's not forget the substance you called a soliquid as a kid. Things like pudding and cake batter that are thick too be liquid but too runny to be solid? Yeah those are called colloids.  Next we have condensation, sublimation, and deposition. After a hot shower or something , usually, I'm talking 9/10 times you take a shower (here's to hoping you all take one...), the mirror is fogged up. That fog is condensation, or a gas desperately trying to go back into a liquid. Ah yes, sublimation, my personal favorite. When a gas straight to a solid. No liquid. I guess you could say it cut out the middle state of matter. Oh that was a bad joke. Any who, dry ice is a perfect example. It's frozen carbon dioxide, not to mention if it makes direct contact it hurts... a lot. Like your skin will burn. So don't do it. Please. Last but not least, technically, is deposition. Deposition is the CONCEPT of a gas going straight into a solid. Like ice crystals and such!

Ok well I have to go now! I hope I helped somewhat! If this works as it did on my laptop then the pictures are hyperlinks just press Ctrl and click and it should lead you there. Here is a nice song for you guys! Have  nice week and check out my previous post about the most awesome invention ever! xx - G

I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream!

Long title, I know. So personally I think this is like a scientific break through of some sor, but my friend Carson strongly disagrees. Behold sprayable ice cream! Don't believe me? Let me prove it, here's the article!

Before you say 'Eww! Melted ice cream spray!', let me explain. There are these special scientists called flavorist who specialize in adding flavor to things. It's really cool to be able to get paid to enhance the flavor in foods. Basically they created a spray, like breath spray (it isn't actual melted ice cream in a tube TEEMA), and it tastes just like ice cream. This all happened in 2007 so why am I talking about it now?
Guess what! They are developing a new flavor*cue drum rolls*..... CHOCOLATE!!!!!!!
Before they had only banana split, blueberry, and strawberry. Now they are adding my favorite flavor! What is this madness! I'm making this official ladies and gentlemen- Too Tarts is the best candy company in the world!

However awesome this product is (at least to me), it can be a hazard. See, it looks a little too similar to markers.

See? Creepy right? I bet you didn't even notice until I mentioned it. This can be a real problem for children. If they see a permanent marker they may just stick it in their mouths. Yes. It happens. That can be dangerous, but over all I think this product is amaZAYN and phenomiNIALL!

Adios! Have a nice day, night, afternoon, etc. xx - G

(P.S. My pictures came from the article so check that out :P  ok I'm really leaving now! xx-G)

Let's Bond!

How ever many weeks ago we talked about atoms, or atomos (hope you remember!). So what happens when you combine atoms/elements?  Chemical Reactions!

Before you go and think all chemical reactions happen like they do in this gif, let me burst that glorious bubble. Right now, hopefully, you are making a chemical reaction by breathing. See when you breathe in you inhale oxygen, but when you breathe out, you exhale carbon dioxide! Technically your body conducts experiments!

Chemical reactions happen when atoms bond. But Gabby, how do atoms bond? Well mysterious stranger who is reading my beautiful blog, how long do you have? Just kidding, this shouldn't take long *she says hopefully*.  There are 3 different kinds of atomic bonds. WHAT? THREE BONDS YOU SAY? WHAT IS THIS MADNESS (cut me some slack people I just had three cups of fanta orange and a waffle cone dripping in chocolate ice cream so I'm gonna be energetic. )

Before we go on, here are some key terms you need to know.

Shell - Electrons going around the nucleus at different distances. Each shell has a certain number of atoms.

Cloud- random electrons going in a roughly spiracle orbit.

Stable - When an atom's outer most shell is 100% full and usually won't react with any other atoms

Unstable - when an atom's outer most shell isn't completely full and interacts with others so they can have a full outer shell.

Ions - atoms with electrical charges

Valence Electrons - electrons on the outer most shell that can bond with others.

I honestly hope you read that because if you didn't you are about to be really confused...

So what are these magical types of chemical bonds? Covalent, Ionic, and Electrostatic Attractions!

We can start with covalent bonds. Covalent bonds share electron pairs, like H2O! Agua! Water! There are two types of covalent bonds, polar and non-polar. Non-polar covalent bonds are bonds with equal sharing of electrons. It happens when two identical non-metals equally share electrons. See! Simple! Now polar covalent bonds are bonds with sharing of electrons.

^^^^^^Example^^^^^^

Ionic bonds happen when one atom takes an electron from another. This causes one to be positively charged and the one who was robbed to be negatively charged.  This causes Electrostatic Attractions, another type of bond. Electrostatic Attractions happen when two oppositely charged atoms attract. You know the phrase opposites attract? This applies here! Haha, I made a funny! Hang in there people we are almost done. Just survive the picture!

Here is a recap song! I hope you enjoyed the post! =)   xx-G
